I keep waiting for confidence to arrive with some kind of announcement. Like it'll knock on my door one morning and say, “Okay, you're ready now. Let's do this thing.”

But that's not how it works, is it?

Acting confident when not ready is something we all struggle with. Confidence doesn't usually show up before the moment. It arrives somewhere in the middle of things, between the deep breath you take and that first shaky step forward.

We spend so much time thinking we're supposed to feel ready before we begin. But here's what I've learned: we find our footing while we're already moving. Confidence doesn't lead the way. It catches up to us later, usually when we're too busy doing the thing to notice it arrived.

The Myth of Feeling Ready

Most of us have spent years, maybe decades, waiting to “feel ready.” Ready to apply for the job, start the business, leave the relationship, write the book, or finally speak up about something that matters.

We imagine there will be this magical moment when everything clicks into place and we'll just know we can do it. We'll feel different. Braver. More capable.

But that moment? It rarely comes.

Readiness isn't something we wait for. It's something we build by starting, even when we're scared.

When I launched Tools to Thrive Today, I didn't feel ready. Not even a little bit. I had ideas tumbling around in my head, stories I wanted to share, and this vision that felt way bigger than me. But I also had this quiet pull, this whisper that said, “You're allowed to begin.”

So I did. That's what acting confident when not ready looks like in real life. Imperfect. Awkward. But moving anyway.

And somehow, it was enough.

That's what I want you to remember when you're standing at the edge of something new. You don't need to be ready. You just need to be willing.

When you can't find confidence in yourself, here's a little secret: you can borrow it.

Lead with your body.

Our bodies can speak confidence long before our minds catch up. Stand a little taller. Take a full breath. Look around like you belong there, because you do. You're not faking it; you're reminding yourself that you can handle this moment.

Anchor yourself in purpose.

Whenever I feel shaky, I come back to the why. Why am I doing this thing that scares me?
Purpose has a way of quieting panic. When we remember the deeper reason we care, all that pressure to be perfect starts to ease up a little.

Take the smallest action you can.

Big leaps are overrated, honestly. It's the small moves that build trust between us and ourselves.

Send the email. Ask the question. Post the first thing, even if it's messy.

Each small action whispers to your nervous system, “See? We're doing it. We're okay.”

Borrow someone else's belief.

There have been times when I've had to lean hard on other people's faith in me. A friend who saw something in me I couldn't see yet. A client who trusted me before I trusted myself. Even a past version of myself who was brave enough to try before.

Sometimes confidence is something we grow together. It's okay to let someone else's belief hold you up until yours comes back.

When Acting Confident Feels Fake (Even When You're Not Ready)

Acting confident can feel weird. Like you're performing or pretending to be someone you're not.

But here's the thing: you're not pretending. You're practicing.

There's a difference between fake and forward.

Acting confident doesn't mean you're lying about who you are. It means you're giving your steadier self a turn at the wheel while the rest of you catches up. You're making space for the person you're becoming.

Confidence isn't a mask you put on. It's a muscle you build.

And the only way to strengthen it is to use it, shaky hands and all.

A Simple Way to Reframe Self-Doubt

Next time you catch yourself thinking, “I can't do this yet, I'm not ready,” try switching it to: “I'm becoming the kind of person who can do this.”

That one word, becoming, changes everything.

It gives you permission to be imperfect. Room to learn and grow. Space to show up exactly as you are right now, without having it all figured out.

Confidence doesn't arrive as a single moment of clarity. It builds itself quietly, through all those small moments when we do the thing anyway.

Try This: A Simple Confidence-Building Exercise

When you're feeling uncertain about something, grab a notebook and write this question down:

What would I do today if I trusted myself just a little bit more?

Then sit quietly and listen for the answer. It'll probably be small. Kind. Maybe a little surprising.

It might be making that call you've been avoiding. Saying no to something that doesn't serve you. Or just taking five minutes to breathe before you begin.

Those small choices, those tiny acts of trust, are where confidence actually lives.
