The pen you choose can transform journaling from a frustrating task into a smooth, enjoyable experience. 5 Writing Tools I Use for Journaling

1. Pilot G2 Gel Pens (0.7mm)

The Pilot G2 is my go-to for daily journaling. Its gel ink glides effortlessly across the page, making writing comfortable even during longer sessions. The rubber grip minimizes hand strain, and the click mechanism is practical and satisfying.

This pen stands out for its consistency—no skipping, no smudges, and it works well on most types of paper. The 0.7mm tip strikes a great balance between precision and durability. The ink does take a second to dry, so left-handed writers might need to take care. Overall, it’s a reliable choice for everyday use.

2. Sakura Pigma Micron Pens

For precision and durability, I always keep a set of Sakura Pigma Micron pens on hand. These pens use archival-quality ink, which won’t fade or bleed through your pages. They’re perfect for detailed bullet journal layouts or notes you want to last.

With tip sizes ranging from 0.15mm to 0.5mm, you can create varied line weights for both writing and artistic elements. I find them especially useful for detailed margin notes and small sketches. However, they’re a bit more fragile than gel pens, so handle them with care. If you really press your pen to the page when you write, you might want to skip this one.

3. Blackwing 602 Pencil

Sometimes you want the freedom to erase and rework your ideas, and the Blackwing 602 delivers. This isn’t just a pencil—it’s an experience. The cedarwood body feels sturdy (smells good) is well balanced in your hand, and its replaceable eraser actually works (unlike those crappy stiff pink ones on regular pencils).

The graphite is smooth yet firm, making it ideal for writing and light sketching. While it’s more expensive than a typical pencil, the quality more than makes up for the cost. It’s my favorite for brainstorming and first drafts.

4. Staedtler Triplus Fineliner Pens

When organizing your thoughts with color helps, these fineliners are a game-changer. Their triangular shape feels comfortable, and they don’t roll away from your desk. The 0.3mm tip provides precision, and with over 20 vibrant colors, these pens make your pages pop.

The water-based ink dries quickly and doesn’t bleed through most paper. They’re great for habit trackers, mood logs, or visually highlighting key points in your entries. I also love these for creative journaling when colors help separate ideas or add flair.

5. Lamy Safari Fountain Pen

For those moments when you want to make writing feel special, the Lamy Safari fountain pen shines. It’s a perfect choice for anyone new to fountain pens. The ABS plastic body is lightweight yet durable, and the stainless steel nib glides smoothly on the page.

Despite its affordable price, this pen feels luxurious. Be sure to pair it with paper designed for fountain pens to avoid ink bleeding or feathering. It’s a step up from regular pens and adds a touch of elegance to your journaling. I don't actually own this one but I have stolen borrowed this one from a friend and really enjoyed using it before I was forced to give it back.

Tips to Keep Your Writing Tools in Great Shape

  • Store pens horizontally to prevent ink from pooling.
  • Cap pens right after use to avoid them drying out.
  • Test pens on scrap paper before using them in your journal.
  • Clean fountain pen nibs once a month for smooth performance.

The right writing tool will feel like an extension of your hand. Whether you prefer fine-tip pens, colorful markers, or a classic fountain pen, the right choice can make journaling more enjoyable. Start with one tool that feels good to you, experiment with different options and build your collection as your style evolves.
